Yrjö Kukkapuro Saturnus Coffee Table for Haimi, 1965

Designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro for Haimi in 1965, the Saturnus coffee table is a distinctive example of Finnish furniture design from the decade. This version combines a broad white circular tabletop with a sculptural cream-toned pedestal base, creating a strong but visually balanced profile.

The Saturnus table series belongs to Kukkapuro’s period of experimentation with plastics during the 1960s. Its rounded geometry and moulded form reflect the influence of Pop art identified in the designer’s own account of the series, while the generous horizontal top gives the table a practical and composed presence.

The pedestal is formed in fibreglass, with a flared foot that gives the table stability and an uninterrupted silhouette. Above it sits a round MDF top in white. The contrast between the slim disc-like top and the curved central base is the defining feature of the design.

With its low height and substantial diameter, this single vintage example works naturally as the centrepiece of a seating area. Its restrained white and cream palette keeps the sculptural form clear and makes it easy to place in both modern and eclectic interiors.
