Tobia Scarpa

Tobia Scarpa’s work spans architecture, interiors and industrial design, much of it developed in dialogue with Afra Scarpa. Their furniture combines clear construction with a strong understanding of leather, timber, metal and upholstery. The results range from visually restrained chairs and tables to generous upholstered forms that changed the language of Italian seating.

Manufacturer and model are especially important in this collection. Cassina records Soriana as an Afra and Tobia Scarpa design originating in 1969 and recognised with the Compasso d’Oro in 1970. Other Scarpa designs were made by companies including Cassina, B&B Italia, Gavina and Knoll. Because makers, editions and later reissues differ, Pino assesses markings, construction, materials and proportions for each individual piece.

Upholstered vintage Scarpa furniture can show softened cushions, changed covers or earlier restoration. Leather and timber pieces develop their own surface character. These changes are evaluated in relation to the specific design: an honest vintage surface can be valuable, while structural or upholstery work should be clearly understood before purchase. Afra and Tobia Scarpa frequently developed furniture together, so attribution should preserve that collaboration when a model was jointly designed. Pino uses the most specific verified attribution available for the individual piece rather than simplifying every work to a single name.
