Pentti Hakala W Chair for Korhonen, 1985

The W Chair is a Finnish armchair designed by Pentti Hakala for Korhonen in 1985. Its open, graphic construction combines a broad curved back with a light tubular frame, giving the chair a distinctive presence around a dining table or as an occasional seat.

The model takes its name from the repeated W-shaped lines formed by its continuous metal supports. Developed during the mid-1980s, the design reflects an experimental Finnish approach to stackable furniture, using the frame as both structure and a defining visual element.

The chair has a polished chromed tubular-steel frame, a moulded black wooden seat and a laminated wooden back and arm section with a warm clear finish. Curved elements and carefully repeated lines create a balanced contrast between reflective metal, dark wood and the warmer-toned backrest.

Five matching chairs are available, each sold and priced individually. The chairs can be stacked together for compact storage, while their integrated armrests and shaped seats make them practical for dining, meeting or flexible seating areas.

The W Chair has an airy footprint despite its generous width. Its combination of expressive geometry, useful stackability and restrained materials works particularly well in interiors where functional seating is intended to remain visually light.
